Agate is a class of chalcedony, representing all the characteristics of Chalcedony as well as other specific characteristics depending on type of Agate. See below for pictures and additional characteristics of black-banded, blue-lace, crazy-lace, moss, tree, and white agates.

Many Agates are sliced and dyed to enhance their visual beauty.  The dying does not reduce their basic characteristics, but can diminish their usefulness as crystals while enhancing their colour characteristics, changing their balance if used for healing.  Changing the balance makes it more-difficult to predict the effects which may be experienced from them, so use naturally-coloured crystals for anything other than adornment of self or home.

Agate has been used, historically, to prepare water used to dispel sickness.   Another of the stones of protection, power and majesty used in the past by high-priests.

It is useful for stabilising the aura, and can transform negativity, or help eliminate it, permitting self-analysis and analysis of those things necessary for well-being.   'Analysis' is a key-word for this stone, with a focus on those things which will awaken inherent talents.

Other characteristics include improving marital fidelity, improving sight, and reducing thirst, and connectedness to the spirit world.

This section will be expanded to include many of the usually-encountered types: lace agate, banded agate, moss agate, tree agate...

Carnelian and Damsonite are also other forms of Agate.
