This page is
about business, which is interesting on a non-commercial site!
Unfortunately business affects us all. Not just what you can buy and where you can buy it, but also how the things you buy are produced and distributed. Following on from the Bright New Ethics, there is also the question of 'doing things at the expense of others'.
There are many questions here about what is, and what is not 'acceptable'. Is it acceptable for someone to try to sell their work for the highest price so that they can then use their profits to buy property or goods which allows them to dominate others or waste valuable resources?
Remember the ethic of 'you can do anything as long as it is not at someone else's expense'? Follow this ethic into commerce, and it means producing and selling in a way which has NO adverse impact on anyone or anything. Please spend a few minutes thinking this one through: it is not an easy concept to understand and follow to a conclusion. You may reach a point where it is obvious to you from examples you choose to explore exactly how difficult this principle may be to achieve at large.
The second issue in Bright New Commerce is one of 'growth'.
Can a business grow in an ethical way, without 'doing things at the expense of others'? Surely the idea of commerce is 'competition for money and market share'?
This is where Bright New Commerce is so important: the belief that all commercial empires, no matter how large, will fall in the face of enterprises which address the personal aspirations and spiritual aspects of their customers. Customers have preferences, and will increasingly exercise those preferences in favour of those companies which are not 'using' their staff, their position, or the environment in order to create excessive profits for their stake-holders who then continue to 'do selfish things at the expense of others'.
Please understand: this is not an 'anti-profit' suggestion, merely a plea to consider the broad picture for long term ethical, sustainable growth instead of only looking for the 'fast buck' or the 'quick return' in a 'dog-eat-dog' world.
The third issue for Bright New Commerce is 'humanity'. You would not take financial advantage of a friend - at least, you would not take advantage of a friend if you hoped they would stay friendly. Equally, you would not expect them to take advantage of you. 'Humanity' reinforces this aspect in a form which prevents large, anonymous corporations from acting in ways different from if they were personally accountable individuals interacting with their friends.

This site does not present a view which 'must' be accepted: to do so would be to perpetuate the bigotries of the past which have resulted in us being in the mess we are in now........ This site is about openness and understanding, and proposes that 'understanding' on a basis which many will acknowledge. The only way to make a difference is 'to be there'.......so help shape the Bright New Dawn by letting us know your views!
